David Brooks—G 8, son of John Brooks
and Rebecca Van Horn. b. ~1747 NJ. d. 4/27/1826 Ovid, NY. Buried Gospel Lot Cemetery, Ovid, NY. From OFFICIAL
REGISTER OF OFFICERS AND MEN OF NJ; compiled 1872 NJ Legislature is listed: Assistant Commissary Generals. Brooks, David.
Assistant Commissary General of Issues. David made a will which was proved 1 May 1826; filed Seneca County NY. Revolutionary
War Veteran, general in the Revolutionary War.
‘The earliest information about the Brooks family was supplied
by the New Jersey Historical Society. This information was in the form of a query written to a newspaper in 1907 as follows:”My
great-grandmother was Rebecca Brooks, born near Bound Brook NJ, August 1, 1777; she married 1796, John Corriel Boice, and
had eleven children; her father was General David Brooks, a Revolutionary soldier; whether he resided in Morris County I cannot
say; he married for his first wife, Sarah Reeder, who was the mother of his children; among whom were James, Jeremiah, Clark,
Rebecca, Freeman and others. General David Brooks was the son of John Brooks (Irish) and Rebecca Van Horn (Dutch), probably
of Middlesex County NJ.” Another query (date unknown) also refers to this Brooks family, as follows: "I would like
to ask J. B. if the following record found in the Boice Bible is the family of Brooks she refers to: 'Clark Brooks married
Sallie Clark; Jeremiah married Sallie ___; James married Mary Covert; John died young; David (by 2d wife); Rebecca; Betsey
married John Beagle; Polly married Miram (Hiram?) Flanders. I think the above family belonged to Freeman Brooks, son of David
Brooks of Bound Brook NJ, and Sarah (Reeder) Brooks; their family names were almost a copy of the above. Their daughter, Rebecca,
born in Bound Brook, Aug 1, 1777, married, 1796, John Coriell Boice of the same place, and in 1804 removed from New Jersey
with a Dutch company formed in New Brunswick by Tunice and Jeremia Rapalie, James Growndyke, Tobias Butternut, et al, to make
a settlement in Seneca County NY. " ‘
