Tunis
emigrated in 1652, married Sarah, and moved onto the Bergen Farm. He also owned property in Bedford, Brooklyn, and Heykoop.
He was a seaman and farmer. He had a small sawmill on his property. He was a prominent member of the colony and
was a member of the Bushwick Militia in 1662, a magistrate of Amersvoorts and Midwout in 1673, and the largest taxpayer on
Long Island by 1673.

Sarah was the first white female born in the state of NY. A marker in her memory stands on the lawn in
front of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad offices in Albany, NY, stating, “Fort Orange, Site of West India Company Colony
1624. Here was born Sara Rapalje, first white child in NY State, 1625. Fort stood S. E. by the river.”
No doctor was present at her birth; she was delivered with the help of Anneke Jans. A few items attributed to Sarah
still exist: a silver spoon with the initials “SJR” in NJ, a chair in the Museum of the City of New York, and
a marriage medallion given to her by her 2nd husband. It was set in the lid of a tankard in 1725 and is in the Brooklyn
Museum of Art.
