James Maynard--G
6, son of Christopher Columbus Maynard and Sarah
?. b. ~1773. d. ~1876, Pike Co, KY. ?Buried in cemetery above Apple Orchard Old Regular Baptist Church
near Pikeville, KY.
James supposedly went back to NC to find a wife and married Rebecca when she was 12. James
and Rebecca lived just above the mouth of Spankum Branch on Brushy Creek. They originally built a home where a large
rock had fallen near the hillside and enclosed it to make a shelter. Kit was born there. They later built a house
1000 yds. upstream. Uncertain if this is the same house which burned down in 1901 that was down the hill from Apple Orchard
Old Regular Baptist Church.

Absalom Young--G 6 b. ~1755 NC.
NOTE: In my own research, I found an Absalom Young in
the 1850 Pike Co., KY, Census where I also found Lewis and Jane Young Maynard. He was listed as being 95, b. NC, farmer.
Also listed were wife Susan, 56, b. VA, children Milla, John J., George W., Nancy J., and Perlina. In 1860, Susan was
listed as 75 (unsure of why there is a discrepancy) and living with John J., George, and Nancy. If this is Absalom Young,
father of Jane, he was born much earlier than previously thought and may also have been married before with an earlier family.
I also wonder about the two Nancy’s. Is the older one from a first marriage and the younger one from the 2nd?
Is the older one a cousin to Jane instead of a sister? Is the younger one a granddaughter to Absalom rather than daughter?
I wonder because all the other kids except the oldest ones were born in Ky and Nancy J. was born in VA.

Smith 12/25/1802, Gibson (Children: Gibson, Sooky, Edy, Larkin, Drury, Rhody, Sally, Nancy, Caty), William, George,
Jacob, d. 4/22/1797.
Originally lived in Surry and Wilkes Co., NC, near Traphill, NC. Attended Roaring River
Baptist Church. Settled for a while near the head of the New River, came through the Blue Ridge Mts., down the Cane
River, and through the Cumberland Gap, and settled on Lower Brushy Creek on the land currently owned by Arthur Maynard (formerly
owned by James Montreville Lowe), located 4 miles below the forks of Brushy Creek. Christopher was either the first
or second settler on the Brushy Fork of John’s Creek. Another family that settled there about the same time was
the Clays. The Blackburns were also early settlers. James was supposedly 12 when the family first came to the
area, which would have made it about 1785. However, census and church records indicate Christopher resided in NC for
at least part of the 1790’s. There is a tale that Christopher may be ½ Indian as his mother was supposedly captured
and held for a time by Indians.
