Note:  Godiva, Countess of Mercia, was the “Lady Godiva” of history/legend.  Godiva asked Leofric to reduce the heavy taxes he imposed on the people of Coventry.  Legend states he said he would if she would ride through town nude.  According to the tale, she asked the townspeople to stay inside while she rode through town covered only with her long hair, but Tom the Tailor looked out and was struck blind.  He was dubbed “Peeping Tom”.  However, history states Leofric responded by putting a tax on pictures on walls, of which only the church and Lady Godiva had any.  She asked again.  He laughed and said he would if she would ride a horse through the streets naked to show the townpeople what natural beauty was.  She rode through town on her horse flanked by two ladies on horseback.  Her long hair was braided, not down.  And she did not tell the townspeople to stay indoors.  Her husband lowered the taxes.  The town of Coventry still has a festival to celebrate Lady Godiva.
