King John Lackland (John Softsword)--G 27, son of King Henry II and Eleanor of Acquitane.
King of England 1199-1216.

b. 12/24/1166 Kings Manorhouse, Oxford, Oxfordshire, Eng.
d. 10/18/1216, Newark Castle, Nottinghamshire, Eng.
Buried Worcester Cathedral.

Considered by many to have been the worst king in English history.  He succeeded his brother, Richard the Lion-Hearted, as king after his 10 year reign.  All 4 legitimate sons of Henry II had a contentious relationship with their father and were often on opposing sides.  John was the youngest but, in spite of that, became king after he disposed of his brother Geoffrey’s son, Arthur, who was technically next in line of succession.  He eventually brought the wrath of the people and the pope against him.  Innocent III laid an interdict on England, suspending religious activities such as burial in consecrated ground.  John was excommunicated eventually for not complying with the will of the pope.  Even his own people could no longer bear his ill treatment.  The barons forced him to sign the Magna Carta in 1215, considered one of the most important documents ever written.  It was aimed at protecting the rights of the people.  John tried to weasel out of the agreement and began retaliating against the nobles and common people but died soon after.
